History of Burgas
Burgas is a successor of the Ancient Greek city of Pyrgos. Besides Pyrgos, the present-day city expands over the area of three other ancient settlements: Castrition, Skafida and Rossokastron.
It was only in the 17th century that a settlement named Ahelo-Pirgas grew up in the area of the modern city. It was later renamed to Burgas and at the time had about 3,000 inhabitants.
Unlike many other Bulgarian cities, Burgas was not much affected by Communist-type urbanisation and has kept much of its 19th and early 20th century architecture.
Today the local port is the largest in Bulgaria, and the city hosts annual exhibitions and international festivals.
